History

The Double Doodle emerged as a designer breed in the early 2000s when breeders began pairing Labradoodles and Goldendoodles to create a friendly, smart, and family-oriented dog with a low-shedding coat. The Labradoodle was originally developed in Australia as a guide dog for allergy-sensitive individuals, while the Goldendoodle quickly grew in popularity for its gentle, loving nature. Combining the two created the Double Doodle—a versatile, balanced companion with the retriever’s loyalty and the Poodle’s intelligence.

Personality

Double Doodles are known for being cheerful, affectionate, and exceptionally smart. They love spending time with their families and thrive in social environments. With the friendliness of Golden Retrievers, the loyalty of Labradors, and the intelligence of Poodles, they are eager to learn and enjoy engaging activities. Their temperament is best described as loving, outgoing, playful, and gentle—making them a favorite among families with children and other pets.

Appearance

Most Double Doodles have soft, wavy, or curly coats that are low-shedding and allergy-friendly. Their coat colors vary widely and may include cream, gold, apricot, chocolate, black, or multi-color blends. They typically have expressive eyes, a well-built frame, and a fluffy “teddy bear” look that doodle lovers adore. Routine brushing helps prevent matting and keeps their coat healthy and clean.

Care

A high-quality diet suited to their size, age, and activity level is essential for Double Doodles. Puppies should be fed two to three meals per day, while adults usually do well with two balanced meals. Daily exercise is important—walks, playtime, fetch, or mental enrichment activities help keep them stimulated and happy. Grooming includes brushing several times a week, occasional baths, ear cleaning, nail trimming, and regular dental care. Their intelligence means they also benefit from consistent training and puzzles.

Double Doodles typically stand 20 to 29 inches tall and weigh 40 to 80 pounds, depending on genetics and size variation.
