Puppy-proofing your home is essential to ensure the safety and well-being of your new furry friend. Here are seven ways to do it:
-
Secure Hazardous Materials: Store cleaning supplies, chemicals, and medications out of reach, either in high cabinets or in cabinets with child-proof latches.
-
Hide Electrical Cords: Puppies love to chew on things, and electrical cords can be dangerous. Use cord protectors or hide cords behind furniture to prevent chewing.
-
Remove Small Objects: Small items like coins, buttons, and children’s toys can be choking hazards. Keep these items off the floor and out of reach.
-
Block Off Restricted Areas: Use baby gates to block off areas that are off-limits to the puppy, such as stairs, kitchens, or rooms with fragile items.
-
Secure Trash Cans: Ensure trash cans have secure lids or are placed in cabinets. Puppies can get into trash and ingest harmful items.
-
Check for Toxic Plants: Some houseplants are toxic to dogs. Research and remove any plants that could be harmful if ingested by your puppy.
-
Provide Safe Chew Toys: Give your puppy plenty of safe chew toys to satisfy their need to chew and keep them away from furniture and other household items.
By taking these steps, you’ll create a safer environment for your new puppy to explore and grow in.
